This year for the first time, Kawakawa primary school had speech competitions. Ngā Rau Puawai had an extra challenge because they were asked to present their speeches in Te Reo Maori.<br /><br />Firstly, the tamariki wrote their speeches in english, and the topic was "I am from..."<br />Secondly, with the help of some of the teachers and kaiawhina, we translated our speeches into maori.<br />Whaea Sally could only choose 2 students to represent our class in the middle and senior speeches.<br /><br />She chose Lulu and Kahukura and we were very proud of them.</div>

Before we went to the islands we learnt a few things about what the Project island team does and how they look after the islands and keep them pest-free.<br />

The tamariki really enjoyed what they had learnt and the haerenga to project island. Their mission afterward was to create a D.L.O to show their learning.<br />

Kawakawa primary school were very fortunate to host the 2019 Southern Bay of Islands Culture festival. We kick started our morning with a powhiri whakatau for all of the other kura who came then first up was Te Mana Tamariki o Kawakawa. This is the teina roopu at our kura, Matua Horrace and Whaea Whetu take the group and Ngā Rau Puawai were cheering for 2 of our students who are in the group - Peyton and Maiah-Lee. The girls in Te Rau Poumanawa have been practising hula for the past few weeks. They have been learning this dance to help them loosen up with their kapa haka performance, this was one of Whaea Sally's favourite items for the day. One of our reading group called Te Roopu Maihi recreated their own version of Maui and Tama-nui-te-Ra. Te Aroha rewrote the story, Rawiri selected the music and together with George and Righteous, the group animated the story using google slides.<br /></div>

This morning Whaea Sally had us creating our own word clouds for a mother's day treat, we explored wordart.com and made hearts for our mums. Since we were pushed for time, we were able to put in some of the words that describe our mums. Firstly, we did a bus stop activity in small groups, each paper had a different area in the school and it was our job to discuss what our 3 R's looked like and sounded like in each area. Whaea Sally took all of our ideas and turned them into word clouds using wordart.com, they are hanging up in our class where we can always see them.<br />

Next, we acted our different scenarios and showed what the 3 R's looked like, and also what it didn't look like. We thought about a really neat way to share this learning with our kura and decided to create an advert - we were inspired by the links ads and wanted to make our own. We had to come up with our own scene, and together we thought of a funny slogan "if you don't have it - it stinks". Here is our ad that we showed the kura at our assembly, we used our ipads and movie maker.</div>

Next week at school, the middle and senior syndicate are having a raft race. The challenge is for each class to create a raft using recyclable materials, they are not allowed to be materials that can easily break in the water as we are having our raft race in our school pool and are not allowed to block up the filters in the pool.<br /><br />What we learnt that the engineering process teaches us how to make a good design and to make improvements it if it doesn't work, we also had to plan and reflect on what we've made.</div>

We are happy to announce that our class movie "Project Island Song" was selected along with Room 16's class movie to screen at the Kaikohekohe Networks movie night. Whaea Sally asked Koda and Ngarui if they could come along to the event at Paihia School, their job was to introduce the film to everyone. </div>

In Room 2 we have been movie making. Each class at Kawakawa Primary School creates up to 2 movies to present to our school. The school has a movie viewing day where we see all of the movies that have been created. After viewing the movies, each student chooses their top 3 movie choices. The 3 movies that have the most votes are then shown at the Kaikohekohe Movie night.</div>

Here in Room 2, we have kick-started our final term with a boat building S.T.E.M challenge.<br />

Throughout the year, our school has been focusing on "Awa (River)" - in term one we looked at the water cycle, in term two we looked at water conservation and what makes a healthy awa, in term three we learnt about the history of our own awa 'Taumarere', and for this term we are going to look at creating something that can float on our awa.<br />

First we had to do a lot of brainstorming together in small groups. We were only given certain materials to use for the challenge. Furthermore, we had to buy the material using our class dojo points that we have been collecting throughout the year. <br />

Nau mai haere mai ki Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori. In Room 2 we have been creating our own Maori Selfie videos. For some of us, we have just worked on saying our pepeha and our whakapapa with confidence, for others we have been extending our reo by saying what we like and our goals.<br />
First we wrote what we wanted to say in Maori, some of us used Maori dictionary for kupu (words) we did not know, but most of us asked Whaea Sally to help us.</div>

This year our school have decided to change up how we do our cross country event. Instead, we had a fun run and it was smiles all around at the UK Rugby grounds.</div>

We dressed up in our house colours and rode the train to our venue. We received a lot of waves from the locals and a lot of beeps from the passing cars.</div>

Our cross country track was the same however we had some fun run stations that we could choose to do as well. There was a cargo net, some tires, pool noodles and Whaea Narelle finished off our race by throwing coloured powder at us.<br /></div>

We were given points for participation, dressing in our house colours, and received a whopping 500 points if our family member ran with us.</div>

As we wind down at the end of a very busy term in Room 2, we have been trying to complete our Matariki wall, we created our own Matariki stars and we made some Diamante poems as well. Our school had a Matariki event where we participated in different events for 2 days - the events were gardening, kowhaiwhai patterns, Drama and art, kiorahi, kite making, and retelling Matariki legends. Whaea Sally can't wait to get more photos of our Matariki activities to put on our wall.</div>

We had a very special guest at Kawakawa Primary school this afternoon. Not only did the "Minstrel" and his lovely wife come to sing and dance with the tamariki, but they also came to share some very valuable lessons about looking after the moana, it's creatures and ourselves.<br />

Matua Bodean came in to show our tamariki how much sugar is in our drinks that are sold in the shops, the children were amazed at the amount of sugar that was in each drink. They guessed which drink had the most and which had the least, they knew instantly that water was the drink with the least amount of sugar but did not know which drink had the most.
